The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. It features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea. It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers. The lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The underground river is reputed to be the world’s longest. At the mouth of the cave, a clear lagoon is framed by ancient trees growing right to the water’s edge. Monkeys, large monitor lizards, and squirrels find their niche on the beach near the cave.

QUICK FACTS:
➔Also known as St. Paul’s Subterranean River
➔Located in the Saint Paul Mountain range in the Phillipines
➔An 8.2 km navigable underground river
➔Longest underground river in Asia and second longest in the world

Spring Flowers

© Billy Wilson 2010

Spring flowers surrounded by snow. It has snowed since I posted the last picture. Its funny to see snow considering that only about a week ago it was nearly 30C.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ƒ/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/500Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/1.8 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent in 35mm Film)

I shot this handheld using live-view and manual focus because I didn’t want to get my knees wet on the grass by using the optical viewfinder. I overexposed by two stops over the metered exposure. I opened the RAW image in ACR and increased the recovery slider slightly and also increased the blacks slider to make the dark parts of the flowers stand out more. I increased the clarity, and manipulated the tone curve slightly to maintain a high-key feel to it. I slightly saturated the yellows and the greens and opened the image in CS4 where I cloned out a few distracting weeds. I then converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG to post online.

Palladian Bridge – Wilton House Gardens (HDR)

Wilton House Gardens, near Salisbury in Wiltshire.

This structure is the world famous Palladian Bridge spanning the Nadder River. The 9th Earl of Pembroke, Henry Herbert, was an architect who built the Palladian Bridge in 1737.

I chose this angle of the bridge to show off the intricate stone carvings on the underside of the roof of the bridge. This is very easy to miss and I have no doubt that most visitors to Wilton House are completely unaware of it’s presence.

HDR image: 5D Canon, mounted on sturdy Manfrotto tripod and shutter release used. The sun was shining virtually right into the lens just to the left of the bridge. I had to wait until clouds covered over the sun enough to take batches of images. In this batch of images I took nine exposures but from these this HDR image was produced using six exposures. Processed in Photomatix Pro & Photoshop.
